Welcome

Located in the East Valley, Cardon Children’s Medical Center, part of the nonprofit Banner Health, is a state-of-theart pediatric medical facility with specially trained physicians and nurses providing family-centered care in an environment created just for kids.

With 208 private patient rooms serving children with a wide range of ailments and injuries, Cardon Children’s offers such pediatric specialties as cancer care,  neurosurgery, intensive care, emergency medicine and more. Last year alone, more than 38,445 children were seen in our emergency department; over 9,100 were admitted; more than 5,267 kids underwent surgery; and more than 3,000 children were served through our Banner School-Based Health Centers Program.

Now, as we look to launch the increased level of care provided for our patients affected by heart disease, we ask that you join us in supporting the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Program at Cardon Children’s Medical Center.

Cardon Children’s Medical Center takes a comprehensive approach to children’s heart care. Our family-centered care means we include both the child and the parents every step of the way. Our cardiothoracic surgery program provides care for children born with congenital heart defects or who develop heart conditions early in life. Congenital heart defects are abnormalities in the heart’s structure that are present at birth. Approximately 8 out of every 1,000 newborns have congenital heart defects, which can range from mild to severe.

Congenital heart defects happen because of incomplete or abnormal development of the fetus’ heart during the very early weeks of pregnancy. Some are known to be associated with genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome, but the cause of most congenital heart defects is unknown. While they can’t be prevented, there are many treatments for the defects and any related health problems. Some congenital heart defects cause serious symptoms right at birth, requiring newborn intensive care in the hospital and immediate evaluation by a cardiologist. Other defects, like small atrial septal defects, may go undiagnosed until the teen or even adult years.

Children with heart disease are best cared for by a team of specialists. Cardon Children’s Medical Center heart care team is uniquely situated to care for newborns with heart conditions including pediatric cardiologists, pediatric heart surgeons, pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, doctors specialized in the intensive care of children with heart disease, specialized nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and many others. Many children will benefit from having their hearts fixed surgically or through a procedure in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

With your generosity, we are excited to launch the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Program at Cardon Children’s Medical Center and help children of all ages survive and thrive.

Cardon Children's Medical CenterAdditionally, Cardon Children’s Medical Center is located on the campus of Banner Desert Medical Center, known for their general and high-risk obstetrical programs. Over the past 25 years, advances in ultrasound imaging techniques have led to sophisticated tools such as fetal echocardiography, making it possible for many congenital heart malformations to be diagnosed as early as the 12th to 20th week of pregnancy. In this way a plan for care can be developed and seamlessly implemented from birth– connecting the services of Banner Desert’s Labor and Delivery department with Cardon Children’s cardiology, cardiovascular surgical services and our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
